How do you make friends in Germany?

A few years ago, I might have said: have children. Now I'd say: get a dog. 🐕

Since "Happy" came into our family, we know almost every corner of our small village. And everyone seems to know Happy.

Anyone with a dog knows the fact: the dogs want to greet each other, so the humans stop and start talking.

The funny part? I now know the names of nearly every dog around us: Matti, Rocci, Lizzy... Their owners' names, not really. Some even years later at Happy's birthday party.

Connection starts with small talks and later the same interest. I never thought to integrate but just make myself comfortable in my surroundings. It's challenging to make friends in Germany compared to in some south European countries. Try to stay open, proactive and curious. That's how I do.

Who was the first person in a new place who made it feel a bit more like home, and how did you meet them?

This is part of my "100 Days of Year One" series. Follow along as I share what I've learned in my first year as Head of Data and Cloud.
