Day 45: I Failed at Making My Side Project Sustainable

I failed at making my side project sustainable.

There. I said it.

I had an idea. I built it. People paid for it, people liked it, and I even got some really nice feedback.

But I had too many things running in parallel.

A side project needs more than time in the calendar. It needs mental space. My work, family, leadership responsibilities and other projects were already taking up most of my attention, so the sprint became another open tab in my head.

I didn't manage to turn it into something sustainable. And I'm learning to be okay with that.

Trying something and not making it work doesn't automatically make it a bad idea. Sometimes it just means: not now.

Next time: less parallel, more focus, more mental space.

I'll try again.

Which project did you have to put on hold because there was simply no space left in your head for it?

This is part of my "100 Days of Year One" series. Follow along as I share what I've learned in my first year as Head of Data and Cloud.
