Day 56: Being a Manager Doesn't Mean Being Better at Everything

I'm terrible at writing meeting minutes.

Seriously. Some people can turn a discussion into a clear document with decisions and action items. I'm not one of them.

At the beginning, I wished I could do better. I tried. It was just okay. Luckily, several people on my team are really good at it. So for example in some workshops I would ask them to take the lead.

Same with Jira tickets. I usually have a clear picture of what I want to achieve. But turning that picture into a ticket description anyone can pick up, step by step? My tickets are sometimes not clear enough. The result: I need to explain to them sometimes quickly per call.

It took me a while to feel easy about this. Now I've accepted it. Being a manager doesn't mean being better than my team at everything. My job is to know what I'm good at, see what others do better, and bring those strengths together.

What am I good at? A lot. :)

What's one thing your team does better than you, and have you let them own it?
