Day 34: Mental Load as a Leader

The first time I heard the term "mental load", I didn't care about it. As a mom of two kids and three fur babies, I'd been multitasking for years. So many things at once? That just felt normal.

But lately, my agenda gets full. My head gets full. And sometimes in the late afternoon, even after work, the headache comes, and my brain doesn't really stop.

As Head of Data & Cloud, I seldom do hands-on work. My job is talking to stakeholders, translating requirements for the team, removing blockers.

One team member might focus on one or two topics. I need to have a picture of all of them.

That's the part I underestimated. So I'm trying to give my team more ownership, and to actually let go of what they own.

I'm still learning how to carry that without carrying everything.

If you lead a team: what helped you carry less of the mental load, not just less of the workload?

This is part of my "100 Days of Year One" series. Follow along as I share what I've learned in my first year as Head of Data and Cloud.
